DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The van der Steur Racing team returns to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship grid with its No. 19 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo at this weekend’s TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks, with a slightly adjusted lineup to its Grand Touring Daytona (GTD) class entry.
Eduardo “Dudu” Barrichello, son of 11-time Formula 1 race winner and four-time Rolex 24 At Daytona starter Rubens Barrichello, will make his WeatherTech Championship debut filling in for the injured Rory van der Steur alongside Anthony McIntosh and Valentin Hasse-Clot.
Per the team, Barrichello is stepping in for Rory as he “takes some time to recover from a recent mountain biking accident. The entire team wishes Rory a smooth and speedy recovery, and we know he’ll be cheering us on.”
The team added to “please join us in giving Dudu a warm welcome to the team as he gears up to take on one of the most legendary circuits in the world.”
The younger Barrichello, incidentally, does have track experience at the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. He has five prior USF2000 starts at the facility in 2019 and 2020, including two wins in September 2020.
His father Rubens (pictured left, in his most recent WeatherTech Championship start in the 2019 Rolex 24 At Daytona driving a JDC-Miller MotorSports Cadillac DPi-V.R) won the United States Grand Prix at the track in 2002.
The younger Barrichello has since shifted to sports car racing and has some global Aston Martin experience.
“So this week, I’ll be racing at Indianapolis in IMSA,” Dudu Barrichello said in a story posted to his Instagram account. I’ll be replacing Rory. Unfortunately, he’s had a crash. So he’s taking some time to get his recovery done.
“I promise to keep your seat very warm and tidy, and yeah, I need to thank the team for their trust and for Val and Tony, who will be sharing the car with me. Super excited for this week. Thank you very much!”
