Marco Andretti Joining Cousin Jarett in LMP3 at Watkins Glen

The Andrettis and Oliver Askew Will Run the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen Endurance Race

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Andretti Autosport announced Tuesday morning that longtime IndyCar driver Marco Andretti will join cousin Jarett Andretti behind the wheel of the team’s No. 36 Ligier JS P320 Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3) for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen on June 27 at Watkins Glen International.

Oliver Askew, who teamed with Jarett Andretti when the car made its IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship debut last month at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, also returns for the endurance race.

Marco Andretti, who finished 19th in the Indianapolis 500 on May 30, announced early this year that he was cutting back from a full-time IndyCar Series ride and would pursue other racing opportunities of interest. He tested the team’s LMP3 along with Jarett at Sebring International Raceway in February, with an eye toward the cousins teaming up at The Glen.

Marco and Jarett’s grandfathers are twins Mario and Aldo Andretti. Marco’s father, Michael, is chairman and CEO of Andretti Autosport after a lengthy and successful career as an IndyCar driver. Jarett’s father, John, achieved victories in NASCAR, IndyCar, drag racing and the Rolex 24 At Daytona, and he helped guide Jarett’s career before dying of colorectal cancer in 2020. Aldo Andretti also passed away late last year at age 80.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to Watkins Glen and sports cars,” said Marco Andretti, who will be competing in his first IMSA race since 2012. “I know John really loved driving with family, so I am happy Jarett and I can continue that part for him.”

Jarett Andretti is eager to race alongside Marco and considers his cousin another mentor.

“Obviously, it is very special for me and my whole family that I will be racing with Marco at Watkins Glen,” Jarett said. “The Glen has been great to us in the past. I am excited to learn from Marco and have him join Oliver and I for our first endurance race this season.”

Andretti Autosport initially entered its LMP3 for Jarett in the IMSA Prototype Challenge development series at the beginning of this year but opted to move up to the WeatherTech Championship at last month’s Acura Sports Car Challenge Presented by the TLX Type S at Mid-Ohio. Jarett and Askew finished sixth in class, retiring early with a mechanical issue.

“I’m so proud to see Jarett and Marco coming together to co-drive at Watkins Glen,” Michael Andretti said. “Racing has always been a family affair for us, but it was especially important to John, and it’s been a goal of ours to get them in a car together. I’m just glad that this opportunity worked out for Marco to come onboard for the first endurance race of the season.”

Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen action runs from June 24-27. In addition to the WeatherTech Championship, other IMSA series competing are the Michelin Pilot Challenge, Porsche Carrera Cup North America and Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America. Tickets for the weekend are available at TheGlen.com.
