Movin’ On Up: IMSA Prototype Challenge Champ Pflucker Joins PPM for WeatherTech Sprint Cup

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 2020 IMSA WeatherTech Sprint Cup for GT Daytona (GTD) competitors is becoming quite popular.

The eight-race season, which opens on April 18 with the 100-minute Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach and includes all races two-hours and 40-minutes and shorter, just picked up yet another entry.

Rodrigo Pflucker, a 23-year-old sports car champion from Peru, has signed on with Precision Performance Motorsports to drive the full WeatherTech Sprint Cup season for the North Carolina-based race team and its No. 47 Lamborghini Huracán GT3.

“I’m thrilled to join PPM in the WeatherTech Sprint Cup series,” said Pflucker, who won the 2019 IMSA Prototype Challenge championship and the three-hour race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. “Since all our races were at the same tracks last year, I believe the experience accumulated after winning last year’s IMSA Prototype Challenge championship will allow me to have a natural transition.”

Pflucker will debut with IMSA veteran Brandon Gdovic in the Long Beach season opener. Gdovic won the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship in 2015 and has made a total of seven starts in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship including one in this year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona. Gdovic will be running full time in the WeatherTech Championship as well as the Lamborghini Super Trofeo season.

“Since I started talking with PPM about the possibility of racing in the Sprint Cup this year, I noticed that we share the same goals for the 2019 season,” said Pflucker. “I believe we will make a great team and will work hard to meet expectations. As PPM has shown its capacity and potential since competing in stock car racing and then in sports car racing, I am very motivated by what awaits us.”

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will be at Sebring International Raceway on March 21 at 10:30 a.m. for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Presented by Advance Auto Parts on CNBC. It can also be streamed on the NBC App with authentication and TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold. IMSA Radio will have coverage available at IMSARadio.com, RadioLeMans.com and SiriusXM Radio (XM 210, Sirius 216, Web 970).
