For the remainder of the 2020 racing season, up-and-coming professional driver Kenny Murillo will be piloting the Apex Capital No. 56 car as a rookie in IMSA’s Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama. His first race will be this upcoming weekend, August 21-23, at VIRginia International Raceway.
Murillo, a 23-year-old from Santa Rosa, California, is no stranger to the racing world, although this will be his first time racing in GT3 Cup Challenge USA. In 2017, Murillo won a series of TCA races in SRO America, followed by wins at Sonoma Raceway and Portland International Raceway in a Mercedes-AMG GT4. He is a data engineer for a family-owned team, Murillo Racing, which currently runs two Mercedes-AMG GT4 cars in IMSA’s Michelin Pilot Challenge.
“I am incredibly grateful to Apex Capital Corp and Topp Racing for the opportunity to make my debut in IMSA’s GT3 Cup. GT3 Cup is an incredible development series with consistently quick drivers, and I’m looking forward to the competition,” Murillo said. “As a data engineer, I know how much of a team sport racing is, even if it’s one person behind the wheel. I am looking forward to learning from everyone at Topp Racing, and earning some results for them after all of their hard work. Our #56 Apex GT3 has some promising speed!”
David Baker, the CEO of Apex Capital Corporation and a veteran driver himself, is looking forward to watching Murillo’s development as a driver through the 2020 season.
“Apex prides itself on developing new talent; we believe that our success as a company stems naturally from our investments in people, and our drive to have fun,” Baker expressed. “Watching folks at Apex grow is the most enjoyable experience I have as the CEO of Apex, and I see that same potential in Kenny. We held a driver shootout weeks ago, and many drivers had more experience than Kenny, but there’s a reason we chose him – in addition to his speed, Kenny’s drive, work ethic, and positive attitude exemplifies our values at Apex. We are pumped!”
The No. 56 Apex Capital Porsche 991 GT3 will be supported by Topp Racing, founded by team president Todd Oppermann. Topp Racing is a veteran team in IMSA’s GT3 Cup Challenge. Murillo will race in the No. 56 this weekend at VIRginia International Raceway. For more information on race times and broadcasting, please visit www.imsa.com.
