Dylan Murry will feature High Point University (HPU) on his Riley Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4 during the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Race at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) on Saturday, August 24.
David and Christy Cottrell, parents of Leah Rose (a 2017 HPU alum), brought Murry and HPU together through their sponsorship. Christy Cottrell currently serves on the HPU Board of Trustees.
“I’m truly honored that the race car Jim Cox and I will drive will showcase the name and colors of High Point University” said Murry. “Hopefully, we can get the Panthers to victory lane.”
HPU is the premier life skills university. Led by President Nido Qubein, it has experienced a mega-transformation, growing from 1,450 to 5,200 students in the last few years and investing $2 billion in academic programs, student life facilities and athletic venues.
Located in High Point, North Carolina and affiliated with the United Methodist Church, HPU attracts students from all 50 states and more than 30 countries. The school offers 64 undergraduate majors, 60 undergraduate minors and 13 graduate degree majors.
The school was recently ranked as the number one Best Regional College in the South for the seventh consecutive year and number one Most Innovative Regional College in the South for the fourth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report. The Princeton Review has recognized HPU as a top school in the nation through their BEST 385 Colleges in the Nation.
Murry, the son of former sports car world champion, David Murry, is coming off a double duty weekend in which he ran both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Watkins Glen and the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Road America 120. Fighting weather issues during both races, the 18-year-old still managed two top 10 finishes – sixth in the K&N race and eighth in the IMSA race.
“It really was an incredible weekend,” said the Cumming, Georgia resident. “Running both of those races was a fantastic opportunity. It was huge for my career. Hopefully, I will get a chance to do it again.”
Heading into the VIR weekend, Murry and Cox are tied for sixth in the driver point standings. They have a win to their credit at Watkins Glen in June.
“The Riley Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4 has been a phenomenal car to drive all season long,” offered Murry. “I anticipate nothing less once we get to VIR.”
Albeit this time at the same venue, Murry will once again be doing double duty at VIR as he will also compete in the Prototype Challenge race. He will share the driving duties with another second generation driver, Skylar Robinson, who will be filling in for Dakota Dickerson. Robinson is the son of another former sports car champion – Chip Robinson.
Murry captured his first professional victory in the Prototype Challenge race at Mid-Ohio in May.
